Nach meinem Solo CD-Projekt "Im Atem der Zeit", das aus Musik, beginnend von J.S. Bach bis Werner Preisegott Pirchner bestand und meinem Klarinettenquintett Album drängte sich immer mehr in mir  die Idee auf, einen 2. Teil dazu mit zeitgenössischer Musik und dem Brahms Klarinettenquintett beizusteuern. Aber welches Thema, welche Musik, welche Komponisten für die Soloklarinette? Wirklich ein halbes Album wieder alleine? 

So kam mir als Thema "Austria?!" in den Sinn... Was macht Österreich aus? Welche Musik, welche Sprachen, welche Heimatgefühle verbindet man mit Österreich? Gibt es die österreichische Seele?

"Eine Brutstätte der Neurose und des Verdrängens" - wie Erwin Ringel einst meinte? Ein bisschen deutsch oder doch lieber nicht? Nicht zum Ostblock gehörig, aber doch stark mit ihm verbunden? Leben wir eine ‚Extrawurscht‘ oder müssen wir stets beweisen, wie gut wir sind? Was ist "DIE" österreichische Musik, die traditionelle Volksmusik? Welche Einflüsse durch den Vielvölkerstaat gibt es (wie z.B. die kärntnerisch-slowenischen Volkslieder, die jüdischen Wurzeln, das burgenländisch-ungarische Musiziergut, die Blasmusik)? Wie werden wir durch unsere verschiedenen Landschaften und Dialekte geprägt? Das gesellschaftliche Miteinander, das Spüren der Unterschiede ohne auszugrenzen, sowie das gemeinsame Wachsen und Leben und vor allem das  "AUFEINANDERHÖREN" wird eine unserer allergrößten Herausforderungen in Zukunft sein.

Für mein Vorhaben habe ich nun Komponisten, Jazzmusiker sowie klassische Musiker verschiedenster Genres eingeladen, ein Solostück für mich zu komponieren, in dem sie Ihren persönlichen Blick auf "Austria?!" hörbar und erfahrbar machen.  Es sind Musiker, die entweder in Österreich geboren wurden und hier leben oder aus ihrem Heimatland geflohen sind und hier Heimat fanden, oder auch österreichische Künstler, die ihre Heimat mit Blickwinkel aus dem Ausland erleben. Sie alle werden ein Solowerk für mich schreiben, die auf einer CD beim Label Gramola Vienna im Frühjahr 2024 erscheinen werden. 

Warum wieder ein Soloprogramm mit Klarinette? Kaum ein anderes Instrument  kann so vielfarbig berühren, aufrütteln, beruhigen und weinen wie dieses Instrument. Und durch die Reduktion auf ein Instrument können Sprache, Gefühle und Intention der Komponisten kaum besser hörbar gemacht werden. 

Alle Werke werden Uraufführungen und damit Ersteinspielungen sein, folgende Künstler werden für mich komponieren:

Florian Bramböck, Andreas Aigmüller, Georg Breinschmid, Kurt Schwertsik, Johann Teibenbacher, Simon Zöchbauer

Die 2. Hälfte des Albums wird das Brahms Klarinettenquintett bilden, 1891 in Bad Ischl komponiert, geprägt durch die ungarischen Einflüsse der damaligen k.u. k. Zeit. Gemeinsam mit meinen Freunden des Auner Quartetts werde ich dieses Meisterwerk der Kammermusik aufnehmen. Abgerundet wird das Album mit Johanna Doderer einsätzigem Klarinettenquintett "hudred-ninety-three", Johanna Doderer schreibt über Ihr Werk: Die Komposition ist im Auftrag des Österreichischen Aussenministeriums und anlässlich des Festaktes 40 Jahre Vienna International Centre entstanden. Es ist ein fanfarenartiges Stück, wobei die Klarinette virtuos dem Streichquartett gegenübertritt. Dies soll auch die exponierte Stituation Österreichs gegenüber den anderen Mitgliedstaaten der Europäischen Union widerspiegeln. Die Uraufführung erfolgte 2019 in Anwesenheit und mit Partiturübergabe an den Generalsekretär der Vereinten Nationen Antonio Guterres.

After my solo CD project „Im Atem der Zeit“ (in the breath of time) with a musical range from J.S. Bach to Werner Preisegott Pirchner and after my clarinet quintet album the idea occured to me to add another CD with again contemporary solo music plus the Brahms clarinet quintet. But what kind of music, which composers for the solo clarinet, what kind of musical ideas and themes should I choose? Another (half an) album with just the solo clarinet?

Taking all this into consideration I came up with the idea of drawing a bow around the term „Austria?!“ (question and exclamation mark intended). What does this term comprise?
What different kinds of music, what languages, what emotional relationship is there to Austria? Is there something like „the Austrian soul“?

Is Austria „a hotbed of neuroses and repression“ as the Austrian psychiatrist and neurologist Erwin Ringel once put it?
Is Austria „a little“ German or not at all for the sake of originality? Is it not part of the Eastern Bloc yet closely connected to it? Do Austrian people feel the constant urge to proove they are good enough? What is THE Austrian music? Is it traditional Austrian folk music? What influence did the multiethnic state exert on the music? e.g. the Carinthian-Slovene folk songs, the Jewish roots, the Burgenland-Hungarian music, the folkloristic brass music. How do the contrastive landscapes and various dialects affect, influence and shape the Austrians? Apart from any musical answer the biggest challenges we are about to meet in the future are social cooperation, accepting diversity and thus reducing social exclusion, as well as living and growing together and most significantly listening-to-one-another open-heartedly.    

All that having in my mind I asked both jazz and classical musicians of different genres to compose solo pieces for me, expressing their personal „view“ of Austria by making it tangible and perceptible through their music. These musicians were either born in Austria and live here or are Austrian musicians who look at their home country from abroad or musicians who they fled their native countries and found a new home in Austria. They all wrote a solo piece for me which will be released on a CD in spring 2024 by Gramola Vienna. 

Why another solo CD for clarinet? Hardly any other instrument
can touch the listener in so many ways by rousing and calming them with its versatile piercing and lamenting tone.    

All works will be world permieres and as a result recorded for the first time ever. The composers are:Andreas Aigmüller, Florian Bramböck, Georg Breinschmid,  Kurt Schwertsik, Johann Teibenbacher, Simon Zöchbauer.

The second part on the CD will be the Brahms clarinet quintet, composed in 1891 in Bad Ischl in Upper Austria with strong Hungarian influences due to he Austrian-Hungarian Monarchy. This master piece will be recorded with my friends of the Auner Quartett and myself. To make things perfect the last piece oft he album will be Johanna Doderer‘s clarinet quintet„hundred-and-ninety-three“. The composer about her composition: the composition was a commissioned work of the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Vienna International Centre. It is a fanfare-like piece with the clarinet as a virtuosic counterpart to the string quartette thus reflecting Austrias exposed position towards the other Member States of the European Union. The world premiere took place in 2019 in the presence of the UN General Secretary Antonio Guterres who was presented with the original music score.

The new CD will be recorded in the winter of 2024 in the „Haus der Musik“ in Innsbruck and released in spring 2024 by Gramola Vienna.
